Volumes of radiation discharge from the mischief-making Fukushima-1 nuclear plant may exceed the volumes that were registered in Chernobyl in 1986, a spokesman for the Tokyo Electric Power operating company said Tuesday.

Junichi Matsumoto, the spokesman, admitted that the damaged power units continued discharging radiation into the atmosphere, adding that the overall volumes might exceed those that were shown in Chernobyl in 1986.
Earlier in the day, Japan’s National Nuclear Security Administration took a decision to raise the accident alert level at the Fukushima-1 nuclear plant to the maximum Seven /’Major Accident’/ from the previous Five /’Accident With Wider Consequences’/ under the International Nuclear Events Scale.
This is the second case in the history of commercial nuclear power industry that an accident at a nuclear plant is assigned the highest level of danger.
The NNSA took the decision after analyzing the data on radiation levels.
The experts have found out that the amounts of radioactive iodine-137 discharged into the atmosphere in the first days after the accident reached about 10,000 terabequerels per hour, which correspondents to Level 7 on INES.

Японские власти завышают степень опасности событий на АЭС "Фукусима". Такое мнение высказали журналистам в Москве представители госкорпорации "Росатом", комментируя решение правительство Японии присвоить аварии на АЭС седьмой (максимальный) уровень по международной шкале ядерных событий. В частности, как отметил директор департамент информации "Росатома" Сергей Новиков, с технологической точки зрения при максимальном разрушении реакторов аварии может быть присвоен лишь пятый уровень, а более высокие уровни определяются лишь в совокупности с последствиями для человека и окружающей среды. "Чтобы присвоить четвертый уровень, должен быть хотя бы один смертельный случай от облучения, то есть по воздействию на людей события на "Фукусиме" не дотягивают даже до четвертого уровня", - отметил С.Новиков. Он добавил, что даже участники ликвидации аварии непосредственно на самой АЭС получили дозы, которые, по оценке С.Новикова, вряд ли будут иметь последствия для здоровья, передает РБК.
