The Psychologisation of Dissent

Ahead of a conference on the psychology of climate change denial, Brendan O’Neill says green authoritarians are treating debate as a disorder.

A few months ago, for a joke, I set up a Facebook group called ‘Climate change denial is a mental disorder’. It’s a satirical campaigning hub for people who think that climate change denial should be recognised as a mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association, and that its sufferers – who probably engage in ‘regular chanting and intensive brainwashing sessions in cult-like surroundings’ – should be offered ‘eco-lobotomies’ to remove ‘the denying part of their brain’. The group now has 42 members. Yes, some have signed up because they get the joke, but others are serious subscribers to the denial-as-insanity idea.

The idea that ‘climate change denial’ is a psychological disorder – the product of a spiteful, wilful or simply in-built neural inability to face up to the catastrophe of global warming – is becoming more and more popular amongst green-leaning activists and academics. And nothing better sums up the elitism and authoritarianism of the environmentalist lobby than its psychologisation of dissent. The labelling of any criticism of the politics of global warming, first as ‘denial’, and now as evidence of mass psychological instability, is an attempt to write off all critics and sceptics as deranged, and to lay the ground for inevitable authoritarian solutions to the problem of climate change.

University departments, serious authors, think-tanks and radical activists are embracing the ‘psychological disorder’ view of climate change scepticism. At Columbia University in New York, the Global Roundtable on Public Attitudes to Climate Change studies the ‘completely baffling’ response of the public to the threat of climate change, exploring why the public has been ‘so slow to act’ despite the ‘extraordinary information’ provided by scientists. Apparently, our slack response is partly a result of our brain’s inability to assess ‘pallid statistical information’ in the face of fear. The Ecologist magazine also talks about the ‘psychology of climate change denial’ and says the majority of people (excluding those ‘handfuls of people who have already decided to stop being passive bystanders’: the green elite again) have responded to warnings of global warming by sinking into ‘self-deception and mass denial’. An online magazine called Climate Change Denial is dedicated to analysing the public’s ‘weird and disturbed’ response to climate change.

The psychologisation of climate change denial – even the very use of that term: denial – reveals how utterly aloof and cut off are the environmental elitists from mass society... That the green lobby is so perturbed by our failure to act in accordance with scientific findings shows the extent to which, for them, The Science is a new gospel truth and religious-style guide to life, and anyone who disobeys it is a sinner, heretic or deranged individual, a moral leper of the twenty-first century.
Psychologising dissent, and refusing to recognise, much less engage with, the substance of people’s disagreements – their political objections, their rational criticisms, their desire to do things differently – is the hallmark of authoritarian regimes... In George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four, O’Brien, the torturer in Room 101, offers to cure our hero Winston Smith of his anti-party thinking. ‘You are mentally deranged!’ he tells him.

Freedom of speech is threatened in America and the West by words, not guns. Words like "conspiracy theorists" stop critical thought from naturally maturing into an informed opinion about history and the course of politics. Another freedom-destroying word is "domestic terrorist" which is used by the Department of Homeland Security and other unlawful government authorities to automatically stigmatize a person or a group who resist criminal government polices.
Words like "conspiracy theorists" and "domestic extremists" are words of darkness, evil, tyranny, and ignorance. These words are repeated by Western governments and the Western media for precise political purposes: to destroy free thought and free speech, as well as vilify freedom fighters, people who question government, politically awakened individuals, law abiding citizens, constitutionalists, and patriots who support the principles of freedom.

Obama's mob, like Bush's mob, and Palin-McCain's mob, have no idea who or what they are supporting because they want to cheer on their leaders instead of ask serious questions about their background, philosophy, and political programs. They are totally identified with them. When someone points out to them that they have been betrayed by the entire political establishment, republican and democrat alike, they half-agree, calling the other side evil, and continue to worship their chosen leader. They view anybody who questions the word or morality of their leader as a threat to their existence. Rather than engage in a debate with people who have a different opinion they resort to all sorts of childish tactics like calling them a "conspiracy theorist," an "extremist," and even a "traitor" without any evidence to support their statements. They don't have any idea what these words were designed for but they repeat them anyway to silence critics and shut down debate.
The strangest thing to happen to you is to present clear evidence to people proving 9/11 was an inside job and be denounced as a crazy person. It is like speaking to a machine. But it is not their fault. I sometimes use the word sheeple to describe deniers of 9/11 truth but I will stop using it in my articles because people are victims of government terrorism and government lying. I put the blame at the feet of the betrayers and traitors at the top who have outlawed debate and persecuted people who are simply asking questions.
"An ideology," says Frye," is an applied mythology," adding that "when we are inside an ideological structure, we must believe, or say we believe," or else be regulated to the status of an outcast, a "conspiracy theorist," and a "nut job." The purpose of the powerful people who construct the ideology in the first place is to justify criminal acts and alienate the critics and dissenters from the rest of society by demonizing and denouncing them by using ad hominem attacks.

Humanity is in big trouble because thoughtful individuals are barred from speaking their minds on public platforms and denigrated as mentally ill conspiracy theorists for their views about politics. State control of mass opinion and mass belief is the norm. The tyrants in Washington and other Western capitals would like nothing better than see freedom die, one conspiracy at a time. Either people will change their minds about "conspiracy theories" and finally begin to reflect on the horrific truths of this age, or they will perish.

"Я-то в советских психушках привык к обществу сумасшедших. Но беда в том, что американское общество всякую идиотскую новинку сразу делает чуть ли не общеобязательной. В Америке, как, впрочем, и в Европе, население ведет себя невероятно конформистски. Все, что тебе втюхивают, надо воспринимать как норму. Чтобы быть успешным, надо быть конформистом. И вот американские шаблоны распространяются повсюду как непреложные правила, отражаясь даже на законодательстве.

Сейчас в США работодатель не смеет разговаривать со своей сотрудницей наедине – должен присутствовать хотя бы один свидетель, иначе того могут обвинить в сексуальных домогательствах, а это означает гибель карьеры и положения в обществе.
Точно так же свои требования стали предъявлять и другие меньшинства – гомосексуалисты, темнокожие, сектанты и т.п. Появились законы о "hate speech" – "языке ненависти", нечто вроде 70 статьи советского Уголовного кодекса, по которой меня судили. "Языком ненависти" объявили любое упоминание о расовых различиях или сексуальных наклонностях. Вы не имеете права признавать очевидные факты. Если вы их упоминаете публично, - это преступление.
В Англии в прошлом году отменили все рождественские общественные мероприятия: британский флаг содержит крест св. Георгия, а это якобы обидит мусульман, напомнив им о крестовых походах. При этом сами мусульмане ничего подобного не требуют. Мусульманин, который держит лавочку недалеко от моего дома, вывесил в витрине флаг с крестом, чтобы продемонстрировать, что он не согласен с этим кретинским запретом – но кто его услышит…
Это привело к такой цензуре, что в наши дни Шекспир бы жить не мог. Да половину его пьес уже и не ставят: "Венецианский купец" – антисемитизм, "Отелло" – расизм, "Укрощение строптивой" – сексизм… Одна учительница в Лондоне отказалась вести свой класс на "Ромео и Джульетту", назвав спектакль "отвратительным гетеросексуальным зрелищем".
Массовая цензура подкрепляется уголовным законодательством. За шутку о гомосексуалистах можно угодить в тюрьму. Обратите внимание, как быстро дело дошло до репрессий.

Был такой философ – Герберт Маркузе, ревизионист-марксист. Он был несогласен с Марксом в одной точке: Маркс считал революционным классом пролетариат (что очевидно не так), а Маркузе учил,что истинный революционный класс – разнообразные меньшинства. Патологию нужно объявить нормой, а норму – патологией. "Только тогда, - пишет Маркузе, - мы, наконец, разрушим буржуазное общество".
Активисты, которые якобы защищают права меньшинств – гомосексуальные и феминистические организации – на самом деле о меньшинствах не заботятся. Они, как в свое время Ленин – рабочих,используют их как инструмент давления и контроля над обществом, и приносят им больше вреда, чем всем остальным. В Америке жена моего друга 7 лет назад основала движение "Женщины Америки против феминизма". Начинала она с несколькими подругами, а теперь у их журнала тираж – 2 млн. Женщины начинают понимать, что феминизм им враждебен, что он разрушает их жизнь, что он не дает им выбирать то, что хочется им, а не то, что им навязывают разные активистки.

Короче говоря, мы имеем дело с серьезной идеологией, которая под вывеской политической корректности пытается разрушить наше общество. Чем меньшинствам хуже, тем лучше их лидерам: будет что защищать. Но их задача – уничтожить наше общество, и это – новая, злейшая версия марксизма.

Цензура, которую ввели защитники "политической корректности", избавила их от диалога. Если бы я с ними спорил, я бы разобрался с ними за несколько минут. Но кто ж мне позволит? Я, полноправный гражданин Великобритании, не могу написать на эту тему статью, опубликовать книгу, принять участие в общественных дебатах на эту тему – потому что таких дебатов нет. Вы по телевизору никаких доводов за или против политкорректности не услышите.
